About mike salter and folly publications

Mike Salter is 54 and has lived in an old cottage on the side of the Malvern Hills since he moved away from his birthplace of Wolverhampton in 1990. Apart from history and old buildings Mike is interested in long-distance walks, cycling, railways, and folk music and dance (especially Morris dancing - see events). Mike is available to give guided tours of old buildings for groups or individuals. He can give talks about castles, churches, brass rubbings and the history of Morris dancing. He can also call ceilidh dances to live music and teach all forms of Morris dancing.

Once a clerk at a steelworks, Mike started up Folly Publications as a one-man business in November 1988 with the aid of the government Enterprise Allowance Scheme, which was intended to aid unemployed people. Originally the books were printed in Walsall (only the Warwickshire titles now remain in print from this era). Five titles were printed in Upton-on-Severn, but since 1994 almost all of Mikes books have been printed by Aspect Design in Newtown Road, Malvern. Until the mid-1990s most of the distributing was done by Mike in person on a small motorbike, but with over 50 titles now covering all of the British Isles this is no longer feasible. (Mike no longer rides a motorbike) and most of the books now have to be posted.
