Progress on producing new books during 2010 has been rather hampered by Mike
developing an R.S.I. problem in his right arm and having to limit the amount of
word or illustration processing that can be done in a day. At long last Medieval
Churches of Scotland has finally been completed and will replace the long
out-of-print and rather flawed Old Parish Churches of Scotland released back in
1994. With this new book goes a companion volume Medieval Abbeys and Cathedrals
of Scotland. A similar volume on Medieval Abbeys and Cathedrals of Wales is
projected, along with a new edition of Old Parish Churches of North Wales, but
as yet no serious work has begun on either, and in any case a new edition of
Castles of Lothian and the Borders should come out first to complete works on
Scotland before starting again on Wales.
During 2011 Mike will try to complete the fieldwork for Old Parish Churches of
Avon. He still hopes to produce Old Parish Churches of Somerset eventually, and
possibly a volume for Essex, having finally visited the rare 11th century
log-church at Greensted in August 2010. However the most recent churches volumes
have not sold well (Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire are hardly on sale
anywhere), and other future volumes remain in doubt. On the positive side
Medieval English Friaries sold rather faster than was expected in 2010.
Mike would also still like to produce Ancient Monuments guides for Orkney and Caithness, despite poor sales of the existing Aran Islands and Shetland volumes. As always, your help and encouragement could make all the difference as to whether a title actually gets produced and into print.
