THE CASTLES OF NORTH MUNSTER £11

176 pages, 570 illustrations (plans, maps, photographs)

The fifth and final volume of a series of books of 2003-4 covering over 1800 surviving medieval castellated buildings throughout Ireland, this book is a comprehensive guide to castles, bawns, town defences and fortified houses in the counties of Clare, Limerick and Tipperary, which form the northern half of the province of Munster. An introduction describing the development of castellated buildings of stone, dating from the beginning of the 13th century until the mid 17th century, in North Munster, is followed by three gazetteers describing the history and architecture of 335 such buildings. The gazetteers are illustrated with many plans, drawings and photographs, and there are also two maps showing the locations of surviving buildings. Tower house lans are at a consistent scale of 1:400. Lists at the ends of the gazetteers give summary information on another 120 buildings of which there are now only minor remains, and there are also lists of sites of former castles.

Also available as part of a five-volume set of Irish Castles books for £35 (including UK postage). The other titles are Connacht, Leinster, Ulster and South Munster.
