This book describes all the features of interest dating from the Saxon period up until the 1790s to be seen in the 266 parish churches in Gloucestershire shown on the map inside the front cover.
The Forest of Dean churches are not included because they appear in a separate volume of this series, whilst the churches of South Gloucestershire will be described along with those of Bristol in a future volume.
An introduction describing the development of the architecture, furnishing and memorials in the parish churches in Gloucestershire up to 1800 is followed by a gazetteer lavishly illustrated with many photographs, plans and brass rubbings.
There is also a summary list of 19th and 20th century parish churches within the area covered by the book.
