MIKE’S MUSIC
The songs available for you to hear on this page were recorded between 1984 and 1987 on a Tascam 244 4-track Portastudio set up in a music studio created from a former scullery at the house I then owned in Wolverhampton. The vocal parts were all sung by the wonderful Claire Lakin, and the lovely guitar part on Three Peaks was played by Nick Jones, both of whom were in a band led by Nick that used my studio to practice in. For three decades a few stereo cassette tapes were the only copies of the finished product. Then in 2017 Jeremy Morfey copied the tracks onto a CD and did his best to remove tape-hiss and restore the original playing speed, since the tapes had stretched over the years. Up until the summer of 2024 less than twenty people had ever heard these songs.
I composed all the music and lyrics, engineered the recordings, and played the keyboard and bass parts on a Korg Poly 800 and a Yamaha DX21. My glockenspiel can be heard on The Prisoner, Again and Admiring The View, and the latter also features my xylophone. I also played a Premier drum kit, bongos and triangle, and I programmed the electronic drum parts used on eight of the songs on a Yamaha RX21, which allows manual playing over the basic rhythm, eg the tom-tom fills heard on the endings of I am the Juggler and The Royal Hunt of The Sun.
My playing features no chords, which gives the songs a very different feel to most modern music. Tears in The Night in particular has a Baroque sound to it, matched with rock drumming. Riffs and sequences (often played in a manner no conventional keyboard player would ever contemplate) are used extensively, along with improvised piano parts (notably on Crack the Sky), simple melodies, funky bass parts, and fills between verses using synthesised violin, cello and flute parts.
I hold the copyright on the words and music, but you are free to play and copy the recordings for private use. You may also use any of the musical or lyrical ideas, in whole or in part, for your own recordings or public performances, provided I’m given appropriate acknowledgement.

1. Paint The Town Red
View Lyrics
We are brave fighting men of fortune
Rebels who fight for power in their hands
Or conscripts forced for a while to bear arms
For legalised murder in many lands
We are the thugs that hijack your aircraft
For freedom’s cause, Christ or Islam
We are the false war-loving statesmen
Talking of peace just for a sham
We are the jobless and the hungry
The headstrong, the lonely, those with no aim
The ordinary man so changed by drinking
Forgets what he did when sober againWe are the men at the factory gate
Stopping you all from crossing our line
If you defy us you’ll be more than late
And we’ll get a caution or maybe a fine
The sportsman’s game now ruined by violence
Nobody keeps to the rules anymore
The shoppers afraid of a hooligan element
Nobody now can maintain the law
We are the thieves that burgle your houses
Forcing a window or the front door
We are the vandals that spray the slogans
Politics and filth on every wallWe paint town bright scarlet red
With the blood of many an honest man
Some say its us that should be dead
Our lives of violence spent in vain
Misunderstanding the truth can be bliss
So of our future we’re rarely afraid
Cruelty and bloodshed they don’t worry us
Until our debt to mankind is paid.
Who bother to use the spoken word
If a fist or a knife in the face will do
Will anyone tame our violent world
Where force is the only power we know -
2. Soliloquy
View Lyrics
I used to dance all through the night
After working a long hard day
I was mistress of the ballroom floor
So my friends all used to say
But that was many long years ago
And some of them have now passed away
And my body has retired before my mind
Memories are all I have todayChorus:
What will you do when you get old
And you find that you can dance no more
The things that gave you the most joy
Are in your past for evermoreNow my hair is so thin and grey
And I’m left in a nursing home
I long to see my family
But they’ve left me here all alone
Surrounded by cripples in wheelchairs
With trivial conversation
I need more active company
Like my younger relationsTennis and swimming were my delight
When I was in my prime
And I climbed the mountains of my native Wales
Sometimes three at a time
What can’t we have perpetual youth
Or at least to the end of our lives
For here I feel as though I’m dead
But my brain is still very much alive -

4. Excuses
View Lyrics
Fortune could be mine, if I was so inclined
If I just had the foresight
To go out there are make them
It really is a crime, when you just can’t make a sign
To tell someone you love them
And you need them all of the time
For I’m just making excuses
I’m just stalling for time
I don’t want to make decisions
Or ever have to make up my mindI wish I could be kind, give money to the blind
If I just had the vision
To go out there and see them
Loving should be fun, but all I seem to do is moan
I wallow in pity around the town
Then slink back to my home
It’s no good making excuses
It’s no good stalling for time
I’ve got to make some decisions
Learn how to make up my mindExcuses, excuses, will my excuses ever end
Excuses, I thought somebody would be my friend
Excuses, excuses, don’t you believe a thing I say
Excuses, excuses
Pack up your troubles for another day
Goodbye, goodbye
It’s time for me to take my leave
You’ve had enough of my excuses
As from your face I can clearly see
Goodbye, goodbye, I thank that I must hit the road
My possessions may weigh me down
But I think I know a way to lighten my load -

6. Isolation
View Lyrics
A sense of isolation
Though you’re standing in a crowd
Deep inside you’re lonely
Though there’s people all around
Like an iceberg in the ocean
Nine tenths you hide from view
Who puts up the barriers
Between them and youIn secret you’re a film star
An air ace or a clown
An athlete or a hero
Or a ruler with a crown
But really you’re a no-one
That no-one wants to know
And the sense of isolation
Is crushing now your willThe gulf between you and them
It’s widening every day
The hope of love you keep alive
It’s fading fast away
Unwanted and unheeded
Will no-one be your friend
Yes a sense of solution
Could drive you to your end -

8. A Tyrant’s Fall
View Lyrics
Its his last day
As ruler of the land
The angry crowd roar outside
For power in their hands
Now he fears them
As they once feared them
He know’s they’ll tear his body apart
If they can break inA triumph of the people
Over the king
Will it bring good fortune
Or disaster bring
A revolution’s started
New order’s on the way
But are we rebels just as cruel
As the wiser people sayNow the end’s near
As he fiddles with his crown
Sparkling jewels blind his eyes
To the chaos all around
He’s alone now
His family have all gone
Some took refuge far away
Or died like his only sonRuling without reason
It brought about his fall
Now he’ll get no mercy
His back’s against a wall
There’s fighting in the courtyard
And killing in the hall
I pray the Lord in heaven
Will forgive us allA triumph of the people, over the king
But I fear for the future
What horrors will it bring
A revolution’s started
Bad tidings on the way
The rebels are turning just as cruel
As the wiser people said. -

10. The Hour Has Come
View Lyrics
Midnight, strikes the clock on my wall
You were warned before
Now take heed of the call
Can you stand a system
Where you wait for hours
Stand in line for your allowance
Finally, at last, the hour has comeIts the dusk, the end of another age
Piles of paper, bureaucratic garbage
The right is crumbling
The left has shattered
Both forget the things that matter
But now, at last, the hour has comeMidnight, strikes the clock on my wall
The day’s complete
But did you heed the call
For come the system
Then come the hour
And our need to regain power
For finally, at last, the hour has comeIts the dawn, the start of another age
The sun is shining
Lighting up the stage
We’ll see some action and some different actors
Increase the number of benefactors
For now, at last, a new hour has come -

1. I am the Juggler
View Lyrics
I am the juggler, I will amaze you
See how I throw things from hand to hand
I am the juggler, I will astound you
Watch my skittles as they fly up and downI walk the tight-rope, watch me balance
Sixty feet up above the ground
I walk the tight-rope, up here I’m a hero
Though I’m a coward, when I’m down on the groundI work illusions, I will confuse you
Watch my saw my assistants in half
I do magic, I know no reality
I treat you all as game for a laughI tame the lions, or at least I try to
Watch as I make them leap about
I tame the lions, but watch my knees tremble
As I put my head in their mouthsI am the clown, I’ll amuse you
Laugh at my antics as I fool around
I am the clown, but beneath my make-up
My happiness is all a front and a shamWe entertain you, but we deceive you
We’re not at all what we seem to be
We’ll entertain you, we’ll do a show for you
Then we return to our secrecy -
2. Three Peaks
View Lyrics
Three Peaks in the sunset
Three mountains I must climb
They symbolise the problems
We all meet in our time
A journey up against the odds
Till shelter I can find
Show me a way to triumph
My lord give me a signSo many paths and ways to go
How do I know which one’s right
When to cower when I cross someone
And when to stand and fight
I want to hold my head up high
In my loved one’s sight
But how can we balance all the terms
To set the whole thing rightI weigh up all the pros and cons
And I know that I can’t complain
But its when they try to change me
That I feel the pain
Why can’t we accept the others
As different yet the same
Love should break all rivalry
As we make up once againI was born to ask the questions
Like where is my destiny
I challenge all the rules by nature
In my battle to be free
So I will attempt the peaks at daybreak
I may not succeed at first
But give me time to find my own way
And I’ll run in the human race -
3. Gothic Fiction
View Lyrics
Knights in castles on cliffs high
Spired turrets touch the sky
Torture chambers make men cry
Nightmare Gothic fiction
An old witch casts a spell
A hunchback rings on the church bell
So the famous novels tell
In classic Gothic fictionA misty graveyard in the gloom
A corpse arises from its tomb
Covered by the new full moon
Spirit of Gothic fiction
Satan plans the whole world’s doom
If goodness ever gives him room
Hell will fill up before soon
The Devil’s Gothic fictionThe babes are lost amidst the wood
Cinders loses her glass shoe
The sheriff chases Robin Hood
Acting Gothic fiction
If we stop to take the time
To think about this petty rhyme
History’s all a pantomime
In our Gothic fictionIllusions of the days of old
When knights performed their deeds so bold
Or so the story’s often told
Misleading Gothic fiction
Have I misread the history books
Romantic heroes or just crooks
If we took a few more looks
We’d rewrite Gothic fiction -
4. Peace of Mind
View Lyrics
When you come to the end of the line
And they look at what you’ve done
You’re not judged by the size of your empire
Or the victories you have won
For kindness is a virtue
You should be remembered for
Or good nature, cheer and wisdom
Whether you’re rich or poorYou can't take possessions with you
When you go to the heaven above
When your mortal body crumbles to dust
And your fame alone endures
But was it built on chattels
Instead of your good deeds
Was profit more important
Than helping those in needLife’s pleasures pass too briefly
Though they serve to pass the time
But the thing’s that most important
Is to die with peace of mind
Is there something on your conscience
Something that you can’t forget
Did you live just for the moment
With no qualms and no regretsDo you lie at ease in your bed at night
Or is yours a restless soul
Ever looking for new horizons
Ever more as you grow old
But never be jealous of others
Never covet their silver and gold
For the best thing in life is ease of mind
And that cannot be bought or sold -
