This book is a comprehensive guide to the history and architecture of 115 buildings dating from the late 11th century to the mid 16th century in Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Somerset and Wiltshire. Following an introduction describing the development of fortified buildings in these areas are five gazetteers illustrated with many photographs and plans. The book includes stone castles, mottes and ringworks which only ever had timber buildings and palisades, moated or embattled manor houses, tower houses, town defences, and artillery forts built by Henry VIII to defend the south coast.
