248 pages, 750 illustrations (plans and colour pictures)
This book features 115 publicly-accessible examples of France’s château-forts, ie medieval defensible buildings. Unlike the famous Renaissance châteaux, mostly still roofed and furnished, many of the medieval château-forts are shattered ruins or only partly roofed. For each featured castle there is a plan and several photographs, plus an account of its history and architectural features. Many other castles are illustrated and mentioned more briefly in the introductory chapters describing the features and development of medieval French castles from the late 10th century to the end of the 15th century.
Available together with any other book priced at £20 as a two-book set for £38, including UK postage.
