Over 280 castellated buildings erected between the early 13th century and the late 17th century still stand in what used to be the counties of Ayr, Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, Lanark, Renfrew and Wigtown. The sites of another 220 such buildings are known, and there are about another 70 places still retaining earthworks remaining from 12th century castles built of wood. Arranged in the form of an introduction followed by four gazetteers, and illustrated with numerous photographs and plans, this book gives details of the architectural history and history of all these buildings. Also included is a short section describing the bastle houses of the late 16th century tenant farmers of Upper Clydesdale.
