THE CASTLES OF THE HEARTLAND OF SCOTLAND £11

160 pages, 350 illustrations (plans & pictures).

Over 230 castellated buildings erected between the early 13th century and the late 17th century still stand in what until 1974 used to be the counties of Clackmannan, Dunbarton, Fife, Kinross, Perth and Stirling. The sites of another 100 such buildings are known, and there are about another 40 places still retaining earthworks remaining from 12th century castles built of wood. Arranged in the form of an introduction followed by three gazetteers, and illustrated with numerous photographs and plans, this book gives details of the architectural history and history of all these buildings, the majority of which are 15th and 16th century tower houses or castellated houses.
